Poe Middle School After-School Meal Program Begins

St. Albans will be serving a hot meal to middle schoolers who participate in Poe’s after-school activities next Thursday, October 28. Here’s your opportunity to participate in this outreach, which began in 2013. Kids there have been asking when we’d return.

More than two-thirds of the students in the after-school programs receive free or reduced-priced breakfasts and lunches, and so our meals support those who face food insecurity at home at the end of the day. Here’s your opportunity to support this outreach!

Now taking pre-orders for frozen, ready-to-bake Bazaar Café sausage rolls!

We had such a great response to our frozen sausage rolls in the online bazaar catalog last year, that we decided to do it again.  In order to make sure you don’t miss out, please email [email protected] to reserve yours now.

Each order of six savory sausage rolls comes frozen and vacuum sealed, with instructions for how to bake at home.  And we are happy to note that the price has not increased – still only $6 per order!

Frozen sausage rolls make great gifts (your friends and neighbors will love you)!  They’re easy to prepare and make a tasty surprise at the breakfast table, or can be cut into smaller pieces for savory bites on a buffet.  And they’ll stay fresh even several months in the freezer.

You can submit your pre-order now; payment will be due at time of pick up.

Thank you!

Stuff the Bus – benefitting local food pantries

Fight Hunger in Fairfax County! Donate to the Stuff the Bus Food Drive on October 9

Stuff the Bus began in 2011 in response to a critical need to help restock the shelves of local food pantries after the holidays. This collaborative program is a partnership between Fairfax County Government and local nonprofits. Now in its 10th year, Stuff the Bus continues to support food assistance efforts for families and households. Since inception, Stuff the Bus has collected over 220 tons of food to feed hungry people in Fairfax County.

The next Stuff the Bus food drive will take place on Saturday, October 9. Fastran buses will be parked at locations throughout Fairfax County from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to collect nonperishable food donations for area food pantries.

The Bazaar Book Room is now accepting donations

The Saint Alban’s Bazaar is on schedule for this Fall, and we are requesting book donations.

If you are interested in our preferences: popular fiction (adventure, historical, crime, romance) books, particularly in paperback format, and history/autobiography books. Cook books are also fine, as long as they are from within the past 10 years.

If you do donate books, please spare a thought for those who have to handle them; and use boxes that are not too large (and therefore too heavy).

If you have any questions, or if you would like to volunteer to help with the book sale at the Bazaar, please contact Izanne Zorin.

Thank you so much!

Summer Changes to the Poe Middle School Food Distribution Program

The Poe Middle School Food Distribution Program is now the Braddock Elementary School Distribution Program

As Heraclitus said, “There is nothing permanent except change.”  With the coming of June, our Poe Middle School food distribution program is transitioning to work with Braddock Elementary School.  We have recently learned that Poe Middle School will not need assistance during the summer months.  Our contact referred us to Braddock Elementary School (a feeder to Poe MS) as they have lost their usual assistance.  The Outreach Committee felt that support for the Braddock families was in keeping with our plans for the Poe families and therefore could move forward.  We are looking for members who can, once again, help us pack the bags and transport them to the H-Mart parking lot in Annandale for distribution.  Our Sign-Up Genius (link below) has openings for our August distribution date.   Thank you so much!

New ministry at St. Alban’s

As pandemic conditions in our area improve we’re looking at the resources we’ll need to live-stream our Sunday morning worship services – just one part of a very complicated process for re-gathering for in-person worship.  Early on, we will need lectors, ushers and Altar Guild members to work with us, but we’re also looking for individuals of any age who are interested in learning our new audio/video system which we’ll use for live-streaming.

We have a brand new audio/video system, and we’ll need volunteers to run it on Sunday mornings.  If you have any interest in learning about live-streaming on the internet and learning some new skills in the area of video production, please contact Fr. Jeff or Fr. Paul.

Palm Sunday palms are here!

Waving palms branches on Palm Sunday to reenact Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem is an ancient and cherished tradition.  While we won’t be gathering again this year for our Palm Sunday procession, blessed palm fronds are available in front of the narthex doors at St. Alban’s.

Come pick up palms for your household as a reminder that Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and Jesus’ passion.  (For those allergic to cats, Clark did not touch any of the palms, and he may or may not be present.)

Palms will be available until 5:00 pm Saturday evening, and from 8:00-5:00 Palm Sunday.  If you are unable to come to St. Alban’s, please let me know via email and I will deliver them to your home.
